Wegovy (Semaglutide): FDA-Approved Weekly Injection for Weight Loss
The only FDA-approved semaglutide product indicated specifically for weight management.
Wegovy is an FDA-approved injectable containing semaglutide, taken once weekly and specifically indicated for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related condition. It contains the same molecule as Ozempic but at a higher therapeutic dose (2.4 mg) studied specifically for weight loss. Wegovy is also approved to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity.

Semaglutide 2.4 mg (GLP-1 Receptor Agonist): Wegovy activates GLP-1 receptors in your brain and gut, reducing appetite, slowing stomach emptying, and producing the satiety signal that lets smaller portions feel like enough. At 2.4 mg weekly, the dose studied in the STEP trials, semaglutide produces the largest weight loss documented for a GLP-1 monotherapy. Your dose is increased gradually over four months, which is the standard way to minimize digestive side effects.
Best for: Adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or sleep apnea. Particularly well-suited for people who want the FDA-approved version of semaglutide specifically studied for weight loss.
Not recommended for: Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2 syndrome, those with a history of pancreatitis, anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone already taking another GLP-1 medication.
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, and stomach pain, particularly during the first weeks and dose increases. These usually improve as your body adjusts. Rare but serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems related to dehydration, and (based on animal data) a theoretical risk of medullary thyroid tumors. Wegovy carries a boxed warning for medullary thyroid carcinoma risk.
